RAMBLINGS FROM THE BIG DOG

John Erickson, Executive Director

May 2010

Another year has just about gone by and we have been blessed with a wonderful spring and a chance to get our spring sports schedule off and running.  This is quite a change from the past two springs and it is a welcome change.  I am sure all of our Activities Directors appreciate not having to reschedule snowed out and rained out events.  It has been a very busy year for the MSHSCA with another record membership.  There have been several technology updates during the past three years and the use of the new programs is evidence of the popularity of the changes.  The on line registration has become the most common method for renewing or enrolling into membership.  Coaches have requested that we accept credit cards and that is now in place.  During the past year we have also used on line registration for some of our clinics.  Volleyball, Softball and Girls Basketball all used the on line registration program for their clinics and have indicated that they are very pleased with the system.

I would like to have you all pay attention to the information regarding membership.  It is important for all of our members to understand that the membership year and the insurance coverage runs from August 1st each year until the 31stof July the following year.   This is very important to keep in mind as you are without insurance when you start the fall season unless you have renewed your membership.  The big change with the insurance this coming year is the addition of liability insurance in the classroom if no other insurance is in place.

I would like some help with the Academic Recognition program.  If your teams have earned gold or silver recognition I need to have you check to see if you have received your tabs.  I would also like to have you ask that the plaque that recognizes the academic excellence is in a location that is visible to all who enter your schools.  I also would like to have pictures of the plaques and other academic awards that have been sponsored by our corporate partner McDonalds.  We need to provide this for the marketing firm of Keller Grayson communications who represent many of the McDonalds restaurants.

It is that time of year when some of our coaches are informed that their contract will not be renewed.  I would like to remind you that it is your right to request the reasons for the non-renewal in writing and to request a hearing.  Please contact us if you need a copy of the law requiring the school district to comply with these rights.  I would also encourage you to document all meetings and comments regarding your position.  In most cases there is no record of previous deficiencies in job performance and no attempt to offer guidance for desired changes.  In most cases the non renewal is the result of a recent incident that upset a parent or fan.  I cannot find many instances where there is evidence of a due process that was followed.  I do not believe that coaches need or even want tenure but they all deserve to have a due process followed in a non-renewal.

I would like to commend the membership on their participation in the recently completed VP election.  This is by far the largest number of votes recorded since we have been in charge of the election.  We had four great candidates and I appreciate you all taking the time to participate.

Mary and I want to thank each of your for your participation in the MSHSCA during the past year.  We are privileged to work for a group of the greatest men and women in out state.  Your commitment and dedication to your schools, communities and students puts you on high pedestal in your communities.  Your willingness to dedicate your life to making our schools, communities and students better is a calling that is second to none.  Thank you!  God Bless you!  Have a great summer!
