CORNER KICKS 5/1/09
Ron Kruschwitz
North St. Paul Boys (retired)
Soccer Communications Officer
Spring is finally here and outdoor soccer is getting started. I hope each of you is getting excited about the summer season and the return of high school soccer in the fall. There are some items that need your attention before next season starts. Special thanks to Dave Halgren, Pat Malicki, Greg Juba and Chris Laird for the help in putting this column together.
The first item that you need to be aware of is the rule changes for the 2009-20010 season that was proposed by the NFHS. We will try and address three of the four changes. The fourth deals with officials uniforms.
3-1-3 Each team shall submit a team roster to the officials at least
five minutes prior to the start of the contest. The game shall
not begin until this is complete. Players, bench personnel and
coaches may be added to the roster after the start.
Rationale: Coaches are usually busy with other matters just
prior to the start of each game and may delegate
this task to a team manager, an assistant coach,
or even a student or player.
4-1-1 Shinguards must meet the National Operating Committee on
Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) specifications.
The NOCSAE seal and the appropriate height range of the
player shall appear on the shinguard. Beginning with the 2012 fall season, the NOCSAE seal and height range shall
be permanently marked on the front of the shinguard.
Rationale: This will assist with the enforcement of this risk
minimization rule and stays consistent with the
spirit of the rule. This standardizes the way the
shinguards are marked.
4-2-1g Illegal equipment shall not be worn by any player. This
applies to any equipment which, in the opinion of the
referee is dangerous or confusing. Types of equipment
which are illegal include the following: ankle braces made of
metal or unyielding materials, unless covered by a stocking
or other suitable material. Ankle brace not made of metal
or other suitable material may be worn outside the stocking.
Rationale: The current rule allows the wearing of ankle braces
but requires they be worn under stockings or
other suitable material. However, ankle braces
are designed to be worn over the stocking.
The second item for your
information is the 19th Annual Soccer Coaches Clinic sponsored by the
Minnesota State High School Soccer
Coaches Association to be held on Friday August 14. This year the clinic will
be held at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka. Greg Juba (Park of Cottage Grove
Girls) the clinic director has registration forms in this issue of the Prep
Coach or you can go online at mshssca.org to find out the same information.
Please note several items of importance to coaches. The first is that there
will not be a Rules Interpretation Meeting at the clinic this year. You will be
able to complete the test online. Second, all dues must be paid for online by
credit card or paid at the clinic. Deadline for dues payment is October 1,
2009. Please take care of this so that there will not be any questions
about All State Teams and Academic Awards. The third item is the registration
deadline. You should mail your registration by August 1st to Art
Seplak. The address is on the registration sheet.
Please consider joining the NSCAA this year. The more state coaches that belong to the national organization, the athletes can be considered for
National awards.
The board has been looking at a different way of rankings for the top ten. At this point in time the board has moved ahead with a new format for this procedure. The top ten will now be ranked on a power ranking.
This new system will be presented at the clinic and will be on line for the 2009 season. Look for more information on the website and at the coaches meeting at the clinic.
The 2009 Soccer State Tournament dates have been set. The first round of the tournament will be played on various sites on Wednesday Oct 28th, Thursday Oct. 29th and Friday Oct. 30th. The tournament will move to the Dome with games on Monday Nov. 2nd, Tuesday Nov 3rd and Thursday Nov. 5th.
That will do if for now. Continue to use the website for information and get your clinic registration in. See you in August. Have a great summer.
