          Joe Joerger and the Staples / Motley Cardinals were on top of the tennis world in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.  Joe began coaching in 1976 and learned from some of the best around, Jerry Sales, Bill Ritchie, Bruce Boland, and most importantly Tom Wolhowe of Staples.  He retired from coaching tennis for good in 1997.  Joe’s boys’ teams advanced to the State Tournament many times and won the Class A State Title in 1990 and 1991. His teams finished 4th in the tournament in 1987.
           
          Joe was lucky to have his four sons  and one daughter play sports.  Dave,  Blaine, and Jeff had very successful careers in tennis.  Dave placed 3rd in 1989 Doubles Tournament, placed 2nd in 1991 Singles Tournament and finally won the state Individual  in 1992.

          Joe was lucky to coach other great players like Greg Borstad, Matt Peterson, Tim Goeden, Mark Haglin, Dave Cizek, Mike Rollins, Bob Anglin, and Luke Grandlund. 
          Roseville’s Tom Vining may hold a record unmatched by others in high school tennis – 1010 wins while coaching both girls and boys tennis. His record for the boys was 508 – 224 and the girls was 502 – 172.   Tom retired in 2003 after teaching English for 35 years in Brooklyn Center, Alexander Ramsey, and Roseville.
           
          Tom’s boys teams qualified for 6 State Tournaments in the years 1977, 88, 93, 94, 95, 96 in the very competitive North Suburban Conference in Region 3AA. Tom also had many individuals qualify for the State Tournament over the years.  He was selected /honored as the Class AA Coach of the Year in 1995.
           
          Tom had equal success and maybe even more success with the girls program.  Vining’s girls’ teams made it to the State Tournament thirteen (13) times.  Their best finish was 2nd place in 1995.  He also had many individual singles players and doubles team participate in the Individual State Tournament.
