ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Academic Award submission forms can be found on your corresponding Sport Association web page.

The MSHSA provides a team academic excellence recognition program.  This program has been in place for over 15+ years and during that time has had to adjust to the ever changing process of reporting a students academic standings.  In response to these changes, the MSHSCA has gone from GPA reporting, to a formula to compute GPA with weighted grades, to using class rank, and finally to allowing the sport associations to develop their own method of determining and academic award system.  During the time that the academic state championship program has been in place, it has become increasingly clear that it is unrealistic to expect schools to display all of the banners that are awarded with the academic state championship program. With consideration of the many changes in academic reporting, over the past years, the Executive Board of the MSHSCA has asked for input from all sport associations at the annual sport presidents meeting as well as the delegate assemblies.  After reviewing the suggestions and practices of the various sport associations, it was voted on and passed at the 2008 Spring Delegate Assembly to adopt a new “Academic Excellence” recognition program.

There will be two levels of academic excellence recognized in the MSHSCA academic excellence program.

Gold Level  The gold standard has been set at a team GPA of 3.75 and above.

Silver Level  The silver standard has been set at a team GPA of 3:50 to 3.74.

The MSHSCA will provide a plaque to each school who qualifies a team as either a gold or silver qualifier.  The plaque will have 24 tabs and as a team (any sport) qualifies a new tab will be added to the plaque to recognize that team at that school.  The plaque will be of high quality and appropriately honor school teams gaining academic excellence. After a school has received 3 plaques, they will be asked to recycle their old plaque and use that for future current plates.

Each sport association will be responsible for determining how many of the varsity players on the roster will be used in determining team GPA.  The MSHSCA expects that all sport associations will work to protect the integrity of academic excellence awards. The intention of these awards is to recognize those teams that gain high academic excellence and no attempt should be made to water down the requirements for easy access to the award.  Since the football coaches association has elected to use the entire team from each school, that could reach a count of as many as 100, their standards have been set at __3.26____ for gold and __3.0____ for silver.

The MSHSCA does not provide individual awards and would like to encourage each sport association to partner with the MSHSL and the Spotlight on Scholarship program.
